Jørgen Roed, who was born on Seeland, learned drawing under Jens Jørgen Fyhn. He then studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He took private lessons with the portrait painter Hans Hansen and studied painting and plaster molding. From 1833 he was a student of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, the father of the golden age of Danish painting. He developed into a solid genre and architectural painter. From 1837 to 1841 he lived in Italy, where he developed an understanding of the works of the Renaissance. After his return, he was appointed Professor of painting at the Academy in Copenhagen.
