Dramatic scene from the greek war of independence, painted rich in details
Since the capture of Constantinople in 1453, Greece was part of the Osmanian Empire. In 1821 a small group started a long planned revolution which started with great success and liberated the Pelopponnes. In the following years Turkish counterattacks put more and more pressure on the Greek rebels. In western Europe this led to a romantic, philhellenic enthusiasm and so several states started to support the Greek rebels. The English poet Lord Byron fought active for the greeks and died in Missolunghi in 1824. The support by many European states led to the defeat of the Osmanian Empire in 1825 and to the creation of the Greek monarchy under Otto I. von Wittelsbach.

The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. The work shows overall tiny and even craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered retouched spots. Minor losses of paint and a minor pressure mark in the canvas are faintly visible. An old restoration is in the rock on the upper right with a patch on the reverse. The canvas shows pressure marks along the underlying wooden stretcher bars and there is some slight rubbing and minor loss of paint at the edges due to framing, as well as a short scratch at the right. The frame shows usual signs of age and wear.
