This work is generally in good condition with some minor chipping to edge of lower right margin.

In the later part of his working life, Andy Warhol produced several hundred works composed of groups of identical photographs stitched together with thread. The subject matter varies considerably from portraits of friends, lovers and celebrities to still lifes. Apparently the idea originated from his former studio assistant, Christopher Makos who had been sewing together his own photographs since 1976. In 1982 Warhol purchased a Bernina sewing machine and Michele Loud (a friend of Makos) was recruited to stitch his photographs together and is responsible for sewing most of them. In 1987 the exhibition, ‘Andy Warhol Photographs’, at Robert Miller Gallery, New York showcased these works for the first time – the show was critically acclaimed and 98 stitched works were sold.

Jon Gould, the subject of the work in the current lot was Andy Warhol’s boyfriend between 1980-1985 and was the Vice President of Paramount Pictures. The eminent American writer and former editor of Interview Magazine, Bob Colacello said of him, "... Jon seemed to have two personalities, two styles, two lives: straight and gay, preppy and flamboyant, on his own in Los Angeles and with Andy in New York. He was... awkward when he walked into a room, agile on the ski slopes and the dance floor….”
