Dramatic genre painting with dynamic composition: the coachman forces the horse and carriage to the left, while a person positioned in front of the carriage in shoots in the opposite direction, where another act is taking place in the background

Condition:

The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. The surface in places with fine craquelure, the edges with slight abrasion due to framing. Upon investigation with UV-light smaller touch-ups became visible, especially in the area of the edges. In the left half of the picture a small restoration. The frame is in good condition bearing minor signs of age and wear like age-related tension cracks.

Adolf Schmidt (1827-1880)

The painter studied among others as pupil of Ludwig Richter at the Kunstakademie in Dresden. From 1848 onwards he was taught by Joseph Karl Stieler and Johann Adam Klein at the Munich Academy. Longer stays in Paris, Belgium and Holland took place from 1862 onwards. Schmidt also spent a longer period in Rome and Sicily from 1864 to 1865. (nlu)
